One Body Per Lifetime
Choreographed by Emory Campbell
Performed at Arts on Site
New York, New York
April 9th and 11th, 2026
Emory, a multitalented choreographer, dancer, director, singer (and professional art model) created a stunning new work in which she asked me to play the role of an artist on stage, live figure drawing throughout the show, as well as help create the set and world of the piece, an artist's studio. The piece explores the complicated inner life of a figure model, with one dancer (performed by Emily Tarrier), playing the role of the "perfect" external muse, while Emory herself danced the role of the model's internal world, exploring what it feels like to exist within a fragile and sometime flawed human body.
I made about 20 original drawings for the set of this piece, pulled from sketches and reference photos I had made during the dancer's rehearsals in the months leading up to the show. These were laid on the floor of the stage while I sat at an easel, drawing rapid sketches that I ripped out, on specific cues as the dancers performed, to represent the passage of time.
